"Raul Coronel (b. February 28th, 1926) is a Mexican sculptor and stoneware designer. Influenced by Mexican, Mesoamerican, African, and Greek Art, Coronel was a diverse potter and was known for his abstract approach to making his art. He amassed an array of work varying from functional wheel-thrown pots and bottles, to tableware and handbuilt planters, lamps, wall screens and more. He would also create wall murals made of clay for both domestic and business settings.
Coronel attended the University of Hawaii in 1951 where he studied art and then studied at the College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland, CA where he worked alongside Peter Voulkos and studied under Marguerite Wildenhain. He completed his B.A. at the California State University, Los Angeles. Coronel would later continue his studies at the University of Southern California where he would receive his M.F.A. By 1955, Coronel opened up a ceramic studio and store in Venice called “Stoneware Designs West” where he would continue to create his work until his retirement from ceramics." - Craft in America
